BELLA DONA: a celebration of life and art
Banning together for local author
Kelowna--On Sunday, October 21 from 10am to 5pm Summerhill Pyramid Winery will be transformed into a daylong festival of the arts.
Banning together to support local author and editor Dona Sturmanis and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation will be a revolving door of artists, musicians, writers, sculptors and dancers performing live on three stages in the inaugural Bella Dona Fundraiser.
A mystery auction featuring original works by prominent artists Cherie Hanson, Rosemary and George Greedy, and Dona May Lee will be up for bid. Musicians Gordon James and Anna Jacyszyn will perform live and unplugged, while poetry readings and local authors recite excerpts from their works. A gourmet barbecue prepared by chef Jesse Croy of Summerhill Pyramid Winery rounds out this fundraising event.
Sturmanis is a well-known journalist, poet, magazine and book editor, and instructor at Okanagan College. She has mentored and inspired hundreds of writers who have gone on to become successfully published and even start literary careers of their own.
Sturmanis was diagnosed with breast cancer in late June, has since undergone surgery and will soon start a series of treatments over the next several months. As a freelance writer, and editor, without partner or family, her ability to earn income during this time is limited.
Tickets to the event are $25 and include food prepared by Summerhill Pyramid Winery plus three stages of live entertainment. Funds raised will go towards Sturmanis in her recovery and treatment of breast cancer with a portion going to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation to support breast cancer survivors who are struggling with finances and are undergoing treatment and recovery.
Tickets for Bella Dona are now available and can be purchased in advance through secure payment via PayPal by going to http://www.okanaganinstitute.com/belladona.php. Tickets will also be available for purchased at the door. For up to date information on the Bella Dona Fundraiser visit https://www.facebook.com/BellaDonaFundraiser.

About Dona Sturmanis
Dona moved to the Okanagan Valley in 1992 from Vancouver where she already had an established 20-year career as a magazine and newspaper journalist, book editor, publisher, poet and college instructor. She started teaching writing and publishing courses at campuses of what was then Okanagan University College and the Okanagan Summer School of the Arts. Her workshops are designed to foster trust and self-confidence in personal and public communication, both in writing and presentation.?
She was also the founder of the popular Secrets & Surprises anthology book series about various towns, written by the people who live in them. She has edited, and written for, numerous magazines.
Dona discovered she had breast cancer in late June and has since been starting the rounds of appointments on the way to surgery and treatment, expected to take several months. She has a certain amount of savings, but as she is a freelance contractor without a partner or family to help, this will eventually run out. Her goal is to become healthy, hold on to her home, and get back to work as soon as possible.
